It is our pleasure to invite you to the Achievements and Challenges in Private Law Codification international scholarly conference organized on the occasion of the 180th Anniversary of the 1844 Civil Code of Serbia. The Conference will be held in the Middle Hall on the first floor of the Union University Law School Belgrade, Serbia, on Friday, 22 March 2024 starting at 10:00 h.
The Civil Code for the Principality of Serbia was adopted in 1844 – nearly two centuries ago. It was the fourth Civil Code in Europe, after the French Code Civil, the Austrian General Civil Code and the Civil Code of the Netherlands.
The Serbian Civil Code 180 years’ jubilee is an occasion to recall and reflect on this precious and unique legal text, which – despite over a century and a half of its validity – remained insufficiently accepted both in legal science, in legislation and judicial practice of its time. Also, this significant anniversary will provide an opportunity to pose the question of why Serbia still does not have a Civil Code. It will soon be five years since the Civil Code Drafting Committee, formed by the Government of the Republic of Serbia, prepared the final draft of the Civil Code of Serbia. However, the status of that legal text today seems to have remained highly questionable.
Finally, and most importantly, this significant anniversary will serve as a challenge for us to look around and shed light on certain issues that contemporary civil law and life in the 21st century bring, and naturally require to be regulated.
The conference language is English.
It will be held live in the premises of the Union University Law School Belgrade and, exceptionally, online via the Zoom internet platform. For online participants, the Conference access parameters via the Zoom platform will be sent at a later time.
Please send your participation application no later than Wednesday, 20 March, 2024 to the email: strucniskup@pravnifakultet.edu.rs
